Maybe Bing doesn’t suck

About a month ago I wrote a blog post about why I hated Bing.com. In checking my Analytics stats today I discovered I got a bunch of traffic from the key phrase ‘I hate Bing’, so it led me to check it - turns out I’m #3 on Google for this (no surprise, I’m sure Google isn’t fond of Bing either). However, I also noticed I’m starting to get traffic from Bing for other stuff too, including ‘web design nova scotia’.

So, I did a quick investigation, and came up with an odd result. Both Google and Bing allow you to select ‘only pages from Canada’ (providing you’re in Canada, that is). I’m in exactly the same spot on both Bing and Google, with or without this option checked (I’m ranked higher in ‘only pages from Canada’).

Obviously Bing has changed a few things (or maybe they read my blog post, who knows, but I doubt they care about a single website). To be clear, the results were not exactly the same - there were different links above and below me - but there were some of the same links in the same positions as well, above mine. It appears we have followed some of the same criteria somehow.

Microsoft is serious about Bing, and it appears they are at least trying to make improvements in the search results. This has been noted elsewhere on other blogs too, so it’s not just me. I do like their image and video search I must say, even though it’s not as fast loading as Google, the features lend themselves to a better user experience.

So, when searching out new information, my new method is to check both places and keep an eye on the relevancy of the results.
